KTM and CFMOTO announced in 2017 that they would make a joint venture: CFMOTO-KTMR2R.
Both companies have been long term partners and the move will see both companies co-develop products for China as well as globally. CFMOTO holds a majority stake of 51%. KTM have been retailing its two-wheel range in China through CFMOTO for years, which includes the manufacturer, assembly and distribution through CFMOTO's channels.
The move is expected to drive KTM's brand share in China but also help R&D for CFMOTO, where a completely new factory is set to open in 2020. The new factory for the joint venture will see CFMOTO producing its own range of 990/1080 V-twin models, in addition to KTM's range of 799cc parallel-twin bikes; expecting to produce over 50,000 vehicles each year.
Part of the joint venture includes CFMOTO purchasing KTM's complete first generation LC8 990 engine platform, which has been developed over the last 10 years. CFMOTO now have exclusive use of htis engine to power their new range and to upgrade the current capacity to 990 and 1080cc.
